Mike Goff: hungry man … chef

Chargers guard Mike Goff has a heck of an appetite. Five years ago, he discovered a new way to feed his hunger--by cooking gourmet meals.

Television star Emeril's signature "BAM!" was what first called Goff to the kitchen. With his supersized spice racks and industrial-strength mixers, Goff has mastered his own elaborate entrees, such as Pork Wellington and his specialty, Creole Tomato Soup. Goff invites his linemates over every Tuesday during the season to bond and share his latest creations. "It's fun to experiment, to try something completely different, and I love a challenge," Goff says. Each week, he encourages his teammates to provide new meal requests.

Word has gotten out about Goff's culinary accomplishments. In 2003, when Golf was with the Bengals, he was the honorary chef for a "Taste of the NFL" event in which he shared ideas and tips with Cincinnati's finest chefs. Goff also has a "Chef's Corner" column, featuring his latest recipes, in the Chargers' Gameday magazine.

When fans tell Goff they've tried his recipes, he gets a kick out of it. However, not everyone is used to seeing a 6-5, 311-pound football player reading recipes. Goff receives strange looks when he buys monthly cooking magazines at the airport. Goff's comeback? "Look, I'm not buying porn here!"

Golf plans to improve his culinary skills after his football career: "I'd like to study seriously one day, maybe become a sous-chef." In the meantime, he'll make sure the O-line is well fed.
