Bob Hille's Starting Five

Sporting News, The, Oct 9, 2000 by Bob Hille

1 USA baseball. The victory by Tommy Lasorda's team raises a question: Which is rarer, the Cubans losing a game that matters or a Dodger winning one?

2 The major league postseason. "Can the Yankees threepeat?" is baseball's second-most pressing question. The first: How many times will we have to suffer through "Who Let The Dogs Out"?

3 College football officiating. Blown calls have gotten so commonplace that gamblers are rethinking whom they should pay under the table.

4 Terrell Owens. Although he paid for his antics with a one-game suspension, he inspired the title for the 49ers' season highlight video: "The Jerk."

5 The PGA and Casey Martin. Their case has reached the Supreme Court, which will hear it right after its landmark ruling in the matter of Caddies v. Small Tippers.
