Scouts' views Observations from the sidelines

Sporting News, The,  Oct 18, 2004

LSU center Ben Wilkerson is the best in the country. He's not huge, but he's smart and very good at getting into the right position. He has great feet.... It's difficult to defend Boston College quarterback Paul Peterson because he scrambles to run and scrambles to pass. He does it on all different kinds of plays--nakeds, boots and dropbacks--so you never know what he's going to do.

... New Mexico runs a 3-3-5 defense and comes at you from everywhere. They blitz from all over the field, and they do a good job of disguising it.... Oklahoma plays a base defense that is basic, sound and very aggressive. They have great players, but the biggest thing about them is they're a great tackling team. They use cover 2 and zone blitz a lot and just let their players make plays.... Virginia Tech running back Mike Imoh always falls forward when you hit him. He's got a lot of shake and is a thick kid. He runs the ball well.... Penn State is tough when they use Michael Robinson and Zack Mills together. You don't even know who's playing quarterback. That just expands what they can do. Mills can run, although with his shoulder injury, I'm not sure how much they want him to run.... I think having Roy Williams at receiver last year hurt Texas. They had to keep him and some others on that team happy. Now they're more of a team. They can run Cedric Benson behind that big offensive line.... You hear how hurt N.C. State running back T.A. McLendon is and how he can't practice all the time, but then you hit him hard in a game, and he doesn't quit. He keeps coming at you. The more you hit him, the more he turns it up.
