Virginia Tech can win it all but likely needs some help

Sporting News, The, Oct 25, 1999 by Mark Blaudschun

The victory puts the Purple Raiders in the record book, surpassing Oklahoma's 47-game win streak, which had been the nation's longest.

And no, the difference in divisions doesn't mean an asterisk should be next to the record. Winning is winning, and when you've won 48 consecutive games, you deserve all of the accolades you receive. Although you might get an argument from, of all people, Mount Union coach Larry Kehres, whose winning percentage ranks first in college football history, ahead of No. 2 Knute Rockne and No. 3 Frank Leahy.

"Mount Union can't break Oklahoma's winning streak because they are Division I and we're Division III," says Kehres, whose 14-year coaching record is 144-16-3. "If you were a longtime Oklahoma person and heard some little school called Mount Union is breaking your record, you'd go, `What are you talking about?' I respect that."

Nice words from Kehres, who took the high road all week as the streak got some of the national attention it deserved.

But consider this. Mount Union has played on an even playing field, with no athletic scholarships for anyone. When Oklahoma compiled its winning streak from 1953-57, high-intensity programs such as the Sooners' could bring as many scholarship players as they wanted. Everyone was not equal. So in essence, the Sooners had an advantage Mount Union has not had.

Mount Union has not lost a game since a 20-17 defeat to Wisconsin-LaCrosse in the semifinals of the 1995 Division III playoffs. Which means no letdowns, no flat games. And it has done this going through a couple of recruiting classes. At times, the Purple Raiders have been lucky--they survived a 57-51 triple overtime win against John Carroll two weeks ago.

But they have not lost a game in almost four seasons--not four weeks or four months.

For that, Mount Union deserves its 15 minutes of fame and the record it has worked so hard to achieve. In typical fashion, Kehres tried to put everything in perspective. "When you win a national championship, it's more of a culminating event from a season of hard work. This is not quite that."

But it's not too shabby. --M.B.

CAMPUS RUMBLINGS, LOCKER ROOM WHISPERS FROM MARK BLAUDSCHUN

The season's first Bowl Championship Series rankings, which determine who plays in the Sugar Bowl on January 4, will come out in one more week. Florida State and Nebraska appear to be running No. 1 and No. 2, which might not set well with a number of top-10 teams, particularly Penn State. Although the BCS minds tinkered with the system and added more computerized rankings, the potential for controversy and embarrassment remains if Florida State, Virginia Tech, Penn State and Nebraska or Kansas State finish unbeaten. ... The Hurricanes' nickname couldn't be more fitting. A year ago, Miami's game with UCLA was postponed because of the threat of Hurricane Georges. It changed the national scene. After UCLA basically was shamed into rescheduling the game in December, a stronger Miami team came away with a 49-45 victory that cost the Bruins an unbeaten season and possible slot in the national championship game. Last weekend, Hurricane Irene caused postponement of Miami's game against Temple. A BCS slot won't be on the line when the teams meet in December, but the Hurricanes' position in a postseason bowl game could be at stake. ... The woes of the Pac-10 have caused rumblings at several schools from unhappy fans and boosters. Arizona State coach Bruce Snyder has heard the jeers for most of the season, and lately USC coach Paul Hackett is hearing from critics. But barring a collapse by either team, don't expect any quick moves. ... Not so secure is Rutgers coach Terry Shea, who could be on his way to a winless season. Rutgers athletic director Bob Mulcahy extended Shea's contract by a year after last season's five victories earned him honors as Big East Coach of the Year. But unless the Knights turn things around dramatically in the final five weeks, a change is probable. ... Word has it that any decision by the NCAA on Notre Dame's infractions will not come before the end of the season. Additional minor infractions found the last few weeks have set back the process. Notre Dame officials don't want a delay that could impact recruiting in December and January. ... When Division III Mount Union broke Oklahoma's NCAA-record 47-game winning streak last Saturday, star quarterback Gary Smeck and receiver Adam Marine garnered laundry honors and had to gather 110 pairs of uniform pants and haul them to the campus wash room.
