Scout views: observations and opinions from two NFL

Sporting News, The,  Oct 28, 2005

The Eagles still are the best team in the NFC, but there are some teams on their heels. If Donovan McNabb can't perform at his normal level, they'll be bypassed. ... Jeff Fisher is a hell of a coach. Even with the Titans' cap troubles and other problems, he hasn't let the wheels fall off the bus.

They haven't solved all their personnel problems, but he's got the players he has playing well. ... Jeremy Shockey has top five hands and top five quickness. He does drop some balls, and he does do some bonehead stuff. He's treated more like a wide receiver by defenses than a lot of tight ends. He's manned up with a safety, he's schemed, he's zoned. You definitely have to account for him or he'll put your lights out. ... I guess the Chiefs' defense is better because they paid money to fix it. But it doesn't look like they're playing all that better. ... We loved Matt Schaub when he came out (in the 2004 draft). He definitely can be more productive than Michael Vick from a passing standpoint. There's no question he's more accurate. ... When you talk about special teams warriors, you think of Larry Izzo of the Patriots. For a guy who has survived in this league as long as he has and not played a position, he's still playing at a championship level. He's not that fast. He's not that big. He just gets to the football. ... LaVar Arrington is one of those guys who is too quick to break off on his assignment, and that puts him out of position. The Redskins can play without him and be effective. They can plug in guys who play within the system. ... Maybe to the public he's under the radar, but Steve Hutchinson is playing at a Pro Bowl level. Since the start of the 2004 season, the Seahawks have led the league in running to the left, averaging over 6 yards per carry. Since they do two-thirds of their running to the left, that tells you something about (LT) Walter Jones and (LG) Hutchinson. ... Head coaches grind it out like nobody else. It's almost a sickness the way they're so involved in the game plan and everything. It's really sad to see how they prioritize their life. The game is No. 1, family is 2 or 3 and health may be 5.
