Your turn

Matthew Valentinas

* "Is this finally the Red Sox's year, with Curt Schilling being the difference?" The "Experts' Choice" boldly declared "No" Though it wasn't as bad as "Dewey defeats Truman" or "Gore heats Bush," your October 25 issue has to be the SPORTING NEWS' equivalent of backing the wrong horse. For a second, I thought I had only dreamed the Red Sox were in the World Series.

Matthew Valentinas, Manhattan Beach, Calif.

* You stuck your foot in your mouth about the Red Sox. Never underestimate Red Sox Nation! We believe; that's the difference between you "know it alls" and us. The curse is over! The Yankees have it now.

Claude Gaudette, South Hadley, Mass.

* I really liked the item in the "Know It All" section that profiled World Series participants and their chances of being voted into the Hall of Fame (TSN, November 1). However, I must disagree with one of your points. I am not a Red Sox fan, but with his gutty performance in the postseason, Curt Schilling earned a trip to Cooperstown. He is now a New England legend, and he deserves to be in the Hall.

Jason Gilow, Oshkosh, Wis.

* In your October 18 issue, Dan Pompei classifies Kellen Winslow as a "marquee" player. All this guy has done is sign a big contract. Before he was hurt, he did nothing on the field. I thought you had to perform to be a marquee player.

Leonard Zbydniewski, Cleveland

* How could you leave Wisconsin defensive end Erasmus James off your half-season All-American list (TSN, October 25)? He is a major reason the Badgers are in the top 10. You would think the SPORTING NEWS would want to make up for the No. 29 preseason ranking it gave Wisconsin.
