Unemployment issues

Sporting News, The,  Nov 8, 2004

As is often the case in an election year, unemployment rates could be down this season. At the midway point, only a few teams appear to be considering a coaching change.

The most likely team to change coaches is Miami, where replacing Dave Wannstedt might be necessary just from a public relations standpoint. Word is that owner Wayne Huizenga already has feelers out, and one of those feelers is spending a lot of time in Baton Rouge, La., where Nick Saban is the Louisiana State coach--for the moment.

A little to the Southeast, in New Orleans, the heat is on Jim Haslett to turn around the Saints in the second half. If the Saints don't start winning, Haslett could be fired by unpredictable owner Tom Benson.

There was talk early in the season that Butch Davis in Cleveland and Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego could be in peril, but both had decent first halves. If their teams fall apart in the second half, Davis and Schottenheimer could pay with their jobs.
