Peyton Manning QB, Colts
vs.
Bill Belichick Coach, Patriots
Against Indy's offense, Belichick keeps things simple. The Pats line up in a 3-4 and generally use a three-man rush and drop eight into coverage. Their cover scheme entails locking up the Colts' inside receivers man-to-man, leaving Manning without a quick-hit option, and playing zone on the outside, with safety help over the top. The strategy has been successful in slowing the Colts' offense.
With more opposing defenses adopting the Patriots' defensive plan, Manning and the Colts are getting increasingly comfortable playing against it. As a result of this coverage, expect to see Marvin Harrison catch lots of passes for 6- or 7-yard gains while Reggie Wayne is used more downfield.

With New England dropping eight into coverage, the Colts must take advantage of the room in the box by calling for running plays frequently. Manning's ability to run also will be crucial. The Patriots know he isn't a scrambler and won't worry about him taking off, so Manning must make them pay by running for at least three first downs. If he's successful, the Patriots will be forced to keep more defenders in the box, leaving them vulnerable against the Colts' passing attack. Advantage: Manning.
