Week 10 matchup
Sporting News, The, Nov 15, 2004
Curtis Martin RB, Jets VS. Ray Lewis, ILB, Ravens
Look for the Jets to start by running Martin away from Lewis. As Lewis quickly flows to Martin, the running back will cut back behind the overly aggressive Lewis.
Martin is an excellent cutback runner who likes to follow the lead blocks of Kevin Mawae, the best pulling center in the game, and guard Pete Kendall. Look for Mawae to get to the linebacker level and have a few nasty battles with Lewis, while Martin reads the blocks and runs opposite from where Mawae takes Lewis. After studying the Ravens-Chiefs game in Week 4, in which Kansas City guard Will Shields destroyed Lewis, the Jets know they can put a guard on Lewis in certain situations and he will have trouble getting off the block.

Lewis hasn't been as quick to the ball as he once was, and he is getting caught in traffic more. A big reason for this is the different personnel on the defensive line. Nose tackle Kelly Gregg is an undersized playmaker who doesn't occupy the double- and triple-teams that keep bodies off Lewis and leave him free to flow to the ball.
Lewis excels at dropping into pass coverage when the Ravens are in a zone defense, and he also is good at teasing the quarterback into checking into a running play, The Jets will have a tight end go 17 yards down the field to try to stretch Lewis deeper than he likes to drop, then turn around and hit Martin on a checkdown route. Advantage: Martin.
