Gordie Howe became the first National Hockey League player to score 1,000 regular-season points when he racked up an assist on his way to victory with the Red Wings against the Maple Leafs, 2-0. The right winger ended his professional career with 1,850 points in 26 years--a record for service that stands even though Wayne Gretzky smashed every point-scoring record Howe or any other player ever held. Howe still owns the NHL record for games played (1,767) and Detroit franchise records for goals (786), assists (1,023) and points (1,809).
