Getting down and dirty

Free from the oppression of the No Fun League, Midway presents an over-the-top take on pro football in Blitz: The League.
When the NFL entered an exclusive deal with EA Sports, it left video game makers such as Midway to explore football on their own terms. Blitz is a story-driven game about an 8-on-8 football league in which vicious hits are rewarded with cash, injured players are injected with "juice" and sent back onto the field and power-mongering owners will do whatever it takes to win. It's a bit of Playmakers, a bit of Any Given Sunday and a bit of XFL. Paul Tagliabue probably would call it a bit of a nightmare.

The frenetic gameplay is complicated by having to hit complex button combinations to make game-changing plays. It's an OK change of pace, but the officially licensed Madden game from EA still is the way to go.
