PLAY ACTION
BY BRENDAN ROBERTS
As Fantasy Source writers, our jobs are to entertain and inform readers. However, sometimes our e-mailers do the entertaining. We get hundreds of e-mails a day, from the Netherlands to Hawaii. A few excerpts (and responses) since the start of the season:
From a Michigan reader: The NFL injury report has become the Ouija board of fantasy football.
That statement is listed as probable.
From New Jersey: Why isn't Darrell Jackson back? I had the same knee surgery and was better than ever after two weeks.
I'm guessing you don't play pro football.
From New York: It seems half the Packers are in the ICU.
The ICU must be in the basement.
From Ohio: In response to your reference to the strip bingo scene from Cocoon (TSN, Oct. 28), is that scene comparable to the hand between two pillows scene from Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
Naked old people or Steve Martin's bum ... tough call there.
From Michigan: Am I a moron for putting my faith in a guy (Ricky Williams) who desperately needs a shave?
Here's hoping your trust doesn't go up in smoke.
From New York: I can't sleep at night because I can't decide whether to start Brian Finneran or Chris Chambers.
Start Chambers and call me in the morning.
From Alaska: Thanks for all your help ... I'm having my worst year in four years.
Um ... you're welcome?
From New York: Should I start Andre Johnson over Keenan McCardell? ... Talk to me, Goose!
Since that e-mail, Johnson's season has wilted like the hair atop Anthony Edwards" head.
From Massachusetts: In our league, a team had a kicker on a bye week. The other teams spent the afternoon picking up every kicker in the league and then dropping those kickers so they would be on the waiver wire for Sunday and the original team would not be able to play a kicker.
Ouch! That might be the most unethical fantasy act I've witnessed.
From a female reader: I am very proud of my success. And to earn respect in this male-dominated pastime justifies, to me, that you guys are in trouble. Watch out--we girls are coming up.
Great to see. If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's not to mess with a motivated woman.
Turning the tables on defense
Buffalo, Washington and Tampa Bay have reputations for strong defenses, but a glance at our fantasy points allowed tables shows they don't stop running backs as well as one might think. In a span of six games before Week 11, all three teams were among the 10 most fantasy-friendly units in allowing points to running backs.
