Jeremy Mayfield: Comeback Driver of the Year

Sporting News, The,  Dec 6, 2004  by Lee Spencer

Jeremy Mayfield has had a tumultuous Cup career. He has talent. He has had opportunities. But it wasn't until he came under the direction of Ray Evernham that Mayfield, 35, was able to put the pieces together.

Mayfield more than proved himself in 2004 by digging deep and pulling out the win at Richmond and securing a spot in the Chase. That win--and the ill fortune of some of his competitors--allowed Mayfield to jump from 14th to ninth. That win and the team's performance also gained him the respect of his peers, who voted him TSN's Comeback Driver of the Year.

"That's something to be very proud of," Mayfield says. "You can win races, win trophies--that's good along the way--but to know you've been recognized by your peers, that says a lot."

Mayfield says Evernham's belief in him and the team has helped build a bond. He has improved each year since he started with Evernham in 2002, finishing 26th, 19th and 10th in points.
