Stealing bases isn't what it used to be

Sporting News, The,  Jan 28, 2005  by Ken Rosenthal

Mets catcher Mike Piazza is widely viewed as a detriment behind the plate because of his inability to throw out runners. But that doesn't seem as important anymore. Teams are placing less emphasis on stealing bases, in part because of the sabermetric aversion to giving away outs. Consider the declining number of stolen base attempts in the N.L. over the past six seasons.

1999 2,789
2000 2,363
2001 2,191
2002 2,217
2003 1,879
2004 1,863

Except for a slight uptick in 2002, the pattern is clear. From 1999 to '04, the drop-off was about 33 percent.

There's a similar trend in the A.L.-the '01 total was 2,320, and the past three seasons have been in the low 1,800s.
