Gale Sayers, a rookie, tied an NFL record 35 years ago when he scored six touchdowns in the Bears' 61-20 victory against the 49ers. No player has scored that many touchdowns in a game since. Four of Sayers' scores were rushing touchdowns, and he also caught an 80-yard pass and returned a punt 85 yards. The Bears previously had allowed six touchdowns in a game by one player twice: Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals scored six touchdowns against the Bears in 1929, and Dub Jones of the Cleveland Browns beat up on the Bears with six scores in 1951.
