The thrill of victory, and the agony of Tom
Sporting News, The, Dec 23, 2005 by Jessica Daues
Scan a bowl schedule and you won't find the Tom Bowl. That's because, in 16 years, no team has showed up to play.
But that hasn't stopped Michigan State grad Tom Cantrell from chronicling its history at the hilarious tombowl.com. In 1989--long before the BCS--Tom, fed up with college football's postseason, founded a bowl that would feature the nation's top teams and determine a true champion.
Every year since, Tom has sent Tom Bowl invitations to his chosen teams and their conferences and posted their replies--which prove BCS bigwigs really do have senses of humor--on TomBowl.com. The site also features Tom Bowl records, recaps and information on the 2005 game, which pits USC vs. Texas vs. Penn State at noon ET on Christmas Eve in Beal City, Mich.
Yes, Tom shows up to watch the games. "A couple of times, buses drove by," he says. "We thought maybe it was a team" It wasn't--but there always could be a first time.
They come in droves to the Tom Bowl in pursuit of ... well, nothing. Tom Bowl in this decade 2000 Oklahoma 0, Miami 0 2001 Miami 0, Colorado 0 2002 Iowa 0, Ohio State 0 2003 USC 0, LSU 0 2004 USC 0, Oklahoma 0, Auburn 0 * 2005 USC vs. Texas vs. Penn State * * Game played in thirders, with each team playing the others for a half.
