Reg-gie! Reg-gie!
Matt HayesPLAYER OF THE YEAR
RB Reggie Bush, Southern California The numbers, the highlights, the ability to score at any moment from any place on the field ... a player like Bush may not come along again for years. And just think how utterly ridiculous his numbers would have been if he hadn't shared carries with LenDale White. Enjoy Bush for one more game before he's the first pick in the NFL draft.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
LB A.J. Hawk, Ohio State He forced opponents to alter their game plans and played his best in big games. He's a terrific run stuffer and a force as a blitzer. Texas coach Mack Brown says there isn't a better defensive player than Hawk, and Brown has one of the best in safety Michael Huff.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
RB Tyrell Sutton, Northwestern Pat White (think Vince Young, circa 2003) carried West Virginia to a Big East title, and running back Darren McFadden is going to be a big star at Arkansas. But Sutton put up 1,390 yards, including three 200-yard games. Even more impressive: running for 112 yards against Penn State's nasty defense.
COACH OF THE YEAR Joe Paterno, Penn State His legacy was taking a beating before this season, but he finally admitted last summer that changes were necessary and allowed coordinator Galen Hall to bring the offense into the 21st century. Week after week, there wasn't a more prepared team than the Nittany Lions, whose only loss was the result of a last-second touchdown pass by Michigan.
