My world: Memphis senior forward Rodney Carney on his high-flying ways

Sporting News, The,  Dec 30, 2005

I got my athleticism from my mother, who ran track. And when I was a kid, I used to mimic my Aunt Carla. She used to walk around on her tippy-toes, so I started walking on my tippy-toes. It became a habit, and I think that built up my calf strength. So I can run and jump.

My first dunk was when I was in the sixth grade and some guys were saying, "You can't dunk!" So I took a full-court run, took off on one leg and dunked with one hand. I always dunk jumping off one leg and using one hand. I like taking off from real far and seeing how high I can get. Sometimes, when I'm just messing around, I'll take off a couple of steps behind the free throw line.

Two dunks are my most memorable. One came when I was a freshman against Ole Miss. It was in transition, and there was one defender under the basket. Then another came from behind and jumped in front of me, and I dunked over both of them. Then last year against Virginia Tech, I stole the ball in the open court and had a one-handed windmill.

Whenever you have a big dunk, it's such an adrenaline rush. When you get up at the rim, it's a wonderful feeling.
