Scouts views: observations from the sidelines

Georgetown forward Jeff Green can do a little of everything. He can pass it, drive it and make a 15-footer. The kid is a terrific offensive rebounder. I think Georgetown has two of the best freshmen in the Big East with Roy Hibbert and Green. These guys can beat anybody in their league. They lost some games early because they might not have picked up everything, but they're getting it now....

Of all of Villanova's guys, Curtis Sumpter has been the best. He's taken the leadership responsibility on a daily basis. He had been drilling jumpers, and you could tell he was getting ready to explode.... Texas point guard Daniel Gibson is big time. It's tough to stay in front of him. He shoots off ball screens with deep range. He's strong. He'll one day be a very good NBA player. He's tough to guard, and he's different than T.J. Ford. But in some ways he's better.... One of the things that surprises me about the Big East is how frequent and willing teams are go to a zone. There's no hesitation, from almost anybody, to drop a zone on someone.... UCLA's young backcourt is right where I thought it would be. At times, Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo have played like freshmen. At other times, they have played like high-level players. Farmar is really good coming off ball screens; he's just smart, and that's dangerous. He does a great job of finding the open man. You have to decide if you're going to double the on-the-ball screens. That's when he's most dangerous.... Von Wafer is a big key to what Florida State does on offense. The Seminoles are trying to work some freshman guards into the rotation, and Wafer's scoring touch is needed on the perimeter. Sometimes he loses focus defensively. When that happens, he's got to come out, which is counterproductive to their attack.
