Spring story lines

Sporting News, The,  Feb 11, 2005

* Nonroster IF Lou Merloni has a good chance to make the Angels out of spring training. Merloni should provide everything the team didn't get from utilityman Shane Halter last year: a veteran with sure hands and the ability to make contact despite playing infrequently.

* The presence of IF Keith Ginter and 2B Mark Ellis seems to leave little room for A's IF Marco Scutaro, who filled in admirably for an injured Ellis last season. Scutaro needs to show much more plate discipline to compete for a starting job.

* Giants nonroster LHP Jeff Fassero. 42, could be a surprise. His fastball has late movement and he can spot his slider and cutter well. Fassero at least will put pressure on the young pitchers vying for bullpen jobs.
