* The NCAA may wind up back in court, where it's on a serious losing streak, as the result of its refusal to allow Temple's Rasheed Brokenborough to have a fourth year of eligibility. Partial qualifiers who complete their degrees in four years can play if they graduate, but not non-qualifiers, which is the case with Brokenborough. The arbitrary distinction could be tough for the NCAA to defend. -M.D.
* George Washington's diminutive point guard Shawnta Rogers is dominating the Atlantic 10 but often gets lost in the shuffle of such names as Andre Miller, Jason Terry and Mateen Cleaves. So the school's sports information department compiled a statistical analysis of the 14 point guards nominated for the John R. Wooden Award, and guess who came out on top?

Rogers led the Wooden nominees in assists and steals and was second in scoring and third in rebounding. Add in scoring involvement (assists times two plus points, to give an idea of how much offense the player is a part of) and Rogers averaged a 1.6, ahead of Miller (3.0), Terry (4.4) and Ed Cota (6.6).
Although the formula helps Rogers by increasing the emphasis on points and assists, there's no denying Rogers has had an outstanding season and may garner a vote or two for national player of the year.
* Four teams remain that can claim perfect conference records. Duke (ACC), Utah (WAC) and College of Charleston (Southern) all ranking in everyone's top 25. Can you name the last team? Winthrop, which also made our chart for biggest turnarounds from last season (page 20), stands atop the Big South at 8-0 and 18-6 overall after being picked to finish last under first-year coach Gary Marshall (a former Charleston assistant).
* If Auburn remains this hot next season, and with four starters eligible to return it's possible, Florida State coach Steve Robinson may want to take ACC commissioner John Swofford up on his offer. Swofford wants the ACC to boycott Auburn in every sport as punishment for canceling a September 2 football game against Florida State. The FSU basketball team is scheduled to return a game to Auburn next year. Despite trailing 20-6 in the series following an 80-68 loss in December, Robinson indicated he plans to be there for next season's game.
* Just how weak is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the 30th-ranked conference in the RPI poll? South Carolina State, which plays the nation's 255th-toughest schedule, is 13-10 overall, but 12 of those wins have come in conference play, giving it a 12-3 conference mark and a 1 1/2-game lead over Coppin State, which is 10-4 in the MEAC, 11-13 overall. Then again, about the same can be said for the Big 12, where Texas started the season 3-8 but now is atop the league at 10-2.
