But then there's 6-3, 190-pound Chad Elliott, a freshman who arrives on campus in August after throwing 48 touchdown passes and only two interceptions last fall at Sacramento (Calif.) Grant High. Although Campbell and Kealy appear to have separated themselves from the pack, Snyder may go with Elliott, if he senses the kid can do it. Remember, he played a hunch four years ago and inserted Plummer into the lineup when senior Grady Benton faltered, and that worked out all right.

"If we replace (Plummer) adequately, we will have an awfully good year," Snyder says. "If not, I don't know who wins many games without a real good quarterback."
