National exposure comes at a high price

Sound off

Newsflash: A North Carolina player actually has an opinion -- and went public with it, too.

Asked if the Tar Heels deserved the No. 1 ranking, sophomore forward Jerry Stackhouse said, "I could care less about that. Give it to whoever ... I don't take much stock in those polls. ... The No. 1 team last year didn't win the national championship -- that was us."

Someone needs to remind Stackhouse that the Tar Heels lost to Boston College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Tip-offs

Two seasons ago, Harry Miller was coach at Temple -- as in, Temple High School in Texas. Now he replaces fired and indicted Darrel Johnson at Baylor. Miller, an assistant on Johnson's staff last season, was promoted on an interim basis. ... Smart decision: The NCAA Men's Basketball Committee said it has dropped its plans to prohibit newspapers with daily betting lines from receiving tournament press credentials. ... It could be a long season for first-year Auburn Coach Cliff Ellis. The Tigers opened with an unimpressive 78-70 victory over Division II Lynn and attracted only 1,108 fans. So small was the crowd that Auburn officials used a curtain to reduce the arena capacity to 10,108, more than 2,000 less than usual. ... Florida center Dametri Hill, the near-300-pound junior known for his work in the paint, is back in the Gators lineup after a two-game suspension for missing class. His first shot from the field? A 3-pointer. He made it, the first of his career.
