Ron McBride is putting the heat on his former boss.

"They've got to win, they can't afford to get beat by us," Utah Coach McBride says of Arizona and Coach Dick Tomey. "I know Dick and he'll come ready to play, they'll be extremely well-prepared. This won't be one of those things where we'll sneak up on any@ body in any way or shape."

McBride, an assistant to Tomey from 1987 through '89, says Arizona must win because of the Wildcats, 21-16 loss at home to Colorado State, which is in the Western Athletic Conference with Utah. Pacific 10 Conference favorite Arizona was 4-0 and ranked No. 6 at the time.

"The (Colorado State) loss had positive and negative effects," Tomey says. "Although it wasn't pleasant at the time, it let us know obviously we're not invincible."

Tomey says the Wildcats won't have any trouble getting up for Utah and their second choice of a bowl in Southern California. Arizona (6-2, 8-3) missed the Rose Bowl because of a 10-9 loss to the team that is going, Oregon, which was beaten soundly at home by Utah, 34-16, in September.

"That's two teams they've beaten who have beaten us," Tomey says. "And, they're ranked ahead of us. I don't think our players will have any trouble getting up for them; we'll be excited to play."
