Man and machine

Sporting News, The, July 21, 1997 by Steve Marantz

Myers has converted 27-of-28 chances, 96.4 percent, best in the majors. Last season, he was 31-of-38, his seven blown saves fifth-most in the A.L. The difference is, Myers says, "Im just getting consistent work. That's always helped me. In '93, I was in every third or fourth day. I'd like to work even more consistently."

Club officials suggest Myers' improvement stems from using a straight changeup more confidently and from throwing more first-pitch strikes. They also say that becoming engaged (he will marry for the first time after the season) has had a settling effect on him.

"He's throwing smarter," director of player development Syd Thrift says. "He's ahead of the hitters."

Orioles manager Davey Johnson may be smarter, too. Last year, Johnson used Myers in 24 non-save situations. Arm-weary perhaps, Myers had a 3.81 ERA after the break and was replaced by Benitez at a critical point of Game 2 of the League Championship Series. This year, Myers rarely is used in non-save situations, although Johnson replaces him against specific batters, such as the Mariners' Edgar Martinez.

All things considered, Myers and the Orioles are set up for a fine second half.

"The first half isn't a season, and I don't pay attention to stats," Myers cautions. "All I know is that 11 of the 13 teams I've been on have won. I just hope we continue it."

It's a long journey to the World Series. But the Orioles just might get there with Myers' help. The onetime machinist-mechanic says he still works on his own cars. The question: Can he keep a bullpen purring through October?
