UT-Martin: A lack of size (only three players are taller than 6-5) will hamper the Skyhawks.

Maryland-Eastern Shore: The frontcourt could lead the Hawks into the upper division of the MEAC.

Cal State Northridge: The Matadors still are looking for a winning season after six Division I seasons.

The Citadel: All five starters are back for the Bulldogs, including solid guard Noy Castillo.

Maryland-Baltimore Co.: The Retrievers shot like ... well, dogs last season (an abysmal 39 percent).

Akron: The Zips were just that last year, going winless in the MAC. Don't expect much improvement.

Morehead State: Coach Dick Fick certainly is fun to watch--probably more fun to watch than his players.

Maine: New coach John Giannini built a power at Division III Rowan. He needs a lot of time here.

Campbell: The Camels usually play good defense. Finding enough firepower will be the problem.

Cal State Sacramento: The Hornets will find the going tough in their debut in the Big Sky Conference.

Jacksonville Slate: The Gamecocks were a solid Division II team before moving to Division I last year.

NW Louisiana: The Demons were dogged by poor shooting (40.3 percent from the field) last season.

Yale: Senior forward Daniel Okonkwo may be the best athlete in the Ivy League.

Central Connecticut: It will be along season without shot blocker extraordinaire Keith Closs, who left early.

Brown: Coach Frank Dobbs likes an up-tempo game but may not have the backcourt for it this season.

Bethune-Cookman: The good--the Wildcats at home. The bad--the Wildcats on the road.

St. Francis (N.Y.): A big year from Danny Manning. Too bad it's not the Danny Manning.

Morgan State: The backcourt is the strong point for the Tigers.

Grambling: The Tigers are extremely young and need a big season from senior guard Kevin Howard.

Lafayette: Coach Fran O'Hanlon has the Leopards on the move, but it still will take another year or so.

Howard: Third-year coach Mike McLeese had great success at D.C.'s Dunbar High before moving on.

Missouri-Kansas City: The Kangaroos may not have a good team, but they have a good nickname.

Columbia: The backcourt may be the best in the Ivy League. But the frontcourt is a disaster.

Holy Cross: Senior forward Chris Rojik is talented, but he may have to do it by himself.

Florida A&M: The Rattlers have a father-son combo as coaches, with the son in charge.

Alabama State: The Hornets, on their third coach in as many seasons, could use some continuity.

Army: This is a given--the basketball team won't have the same kind of success as the football team.

Texas-Arlington: Hoops aren't serious here, as home games are played at a campus auditorium.

Georgia Southern: The Eagles were offensive on offense last season, averaging 56.5 points per game.

Eastern Washington: A team with 10 newcomers will struggle to top last year's win total (three).

Robert Morris: New coach Jim Boone was very successful at the Division II level at California (Pa.).
