Speaking of the Big East, Virginia Tech--which had a possible Fiesta Bowl bid in its grasp--lost, 30-23, to Pittsburg. And West Virginia fell, 21-14, to Norte Dame. Some say it's a sign of the Big East's increasing parity that Tech lost to a rebuilding team like Pittsburg. We disagree: It's a sign of the league's raging mediocrity. ... The nation's best junior college recruit? It's running back Frank Murphy, of Garden City (Kan.) CC. Murphy, a 220-pounder from Callahan, Fla. (about 30 miles north of Jacksonville), reportedly is being courted heavily by Tennessee and Nebraska. Murphy is said to run a 4.29-second 40-yard dash.
