Rfp For Multiple-Application Electronic Payment System - U.S. Department of Transportation issues Request For Proposals - Brief Article
Railway Age, Oct, 1999
The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a Request For Proposals to operationally test a multiple-application electronic payment system. The agency wants to identify and evaluate the issues associated with establishing partnerships between transit service providers and other entities in the development and use of such systems, with a specific focus on transit fare collection, parking payment, and electronic toll collection. In its RFP, the DOT says recent advances in electronic payment systems and stored value card technology "present a unique opportunity for public and private institutions to establish mutually beneficial partnerships in the development and management of electronic payment systems for transportation. Private sector firms expected to participate are those in the electronic payments and financial services industries."
DOT hopes this project "will help identify and address the complex institutional issues surrounding electronic payment systems in transportation and advance the goal a seamless, multi-modal transportation payment infrastructure while improving operational efficiency." Only public transit agencies and metropolitan planning organizations in the United States are eligible to submit proposals, which must be received on or before Oct. 25.
