Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Awarded a $12 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., to upgrade WMATA's smartcard-based fare collection system's central computing system. The upgrades will support new customer service initiatives for the SmarTrip[R] card system, giving customers more options for purchasing and reloading smartcards.
A $2.4 million option includes Metrorail specific upgrades. Cubic will provide software and hardware upgrades that will interface with WMATA's regional customer service center, expected to be operational in mid-2004.
