BLE voting again on merger with UTU - Industry outlook - referendum on merging the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the United Transportation Union - Brief Article

Railway Age, Nov, 2001

"The final decision rests with you," Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers President Don M. Hahs told his members last month as he announced that BLE would conduct a second referendum on a proposed merger with the United Transportation Union. A federal judge halted the counting of ballots in an initial referendum after dissident BLE officers filed a suit charging that the balloting procedures violated the BLE's constitution.

The BLE dissidents will be permitted to include with the new ballots a statement opposing the merger. Ballots were to be mailed Nov. 7 and counted Dec. 10. Only BLE members will vote in the second referendum, because the validity of UTU ballots in the initial referendum was never challenged.
