UP-CN offer fast intermodal service into Mexico - Rail update - Brief Article

Railway Age, Nov, 2001

Union Pacific and Canadian National are offering Detroit-Toronto area shippers expedited intermodal service, with third-morning delivery in Houston, fourth-morning availability at UP's Port Laredo, Tex., intermodal yard, and sixth-morning delivery in Mexico City in cooperation with TFM (Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana). The carriers said this is "the first in a series of CN-UP joint initiatives designed to improve transit times and rail service, expedite border crossings, and provide truck-competitive service.

CN's new $25 million (C) Edmonton intermodal terminal is open for business, and will operate with an initial annual capacity of 150,000 units, seven days a week. The seven-track facility has three front-lift mobile cranes and two pad tracks that can accommodate full-length trains without switching. The terminal, located on 370 acres of land adjacent to CN's transcontinental main line, can handle trains up to 12,000 feet long, and provides truckers easy access to Yellowhead Trail to reach key cities throughout Northern Alberta.
