FRA funds video-camera crossing safety research

Railway Age, Nov, 2004

The Federal Railroad Administration is joining the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Norfolk Southern in federally-funded research to analyze real-time data of actual grade crossing collisions and trespasser incidents captured by locomotive-mounted digital video cameras. In announcing a $482,000 project grant, FRA said "this type of data has never before been available for research purposes." North Carolina DOT has installed video cameras on its Piedmont passenger trains operating between Raleigh and Charlotte.

NS has mounted RailView cameras on about 850 locomotives operating system-wide. FRA also will grant $795,000 for the design and construction of a pedestrian underpass in the town of Clayton southeast of Raleigh. FRA sees this as "a model of how a smart investment can dramatically improve rail safety. Not only will pedestrians be separated from train traffic along a section of track with a history of trespass incidents, it also will increase safety at other locations by allowing for the closure of three additional grade crossings."
