$74 Million Flyover For Kansas City - work has begun to life the east-west tracts of the Bulington Northern and Santa Fe and the Kansas City Terminal over the Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern north-south tracks - Brief Article

Railway Age, Nov, 1998

Work began in Kansas City, Mo., last month on the $74 million Sheffield Junction Flyover, which will lift the east-west tracts of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe and the Kansas City Terminal over the north-south tracks of Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern.

Kansas City is the nation's second-busiest rail hub. The Sheffield Junction project is designed to relieve congestion at the city's third-busiest rail intersection. "Currently, trains moving through Kansas City in effect must deal with the rail equivalent of a four-way stop," said KCT President Robert Arnold. "North-south and east-west trains now must stop and wait their turn on a first-come, first-moved basis."
