Keep 'em rolling
Railway Age, Feb, 2005
Keep 'em rolling: Norfolk Southern and CSXT, along with Star Intermodal, have sent well over 1,000 carloads of wheeled and tracked vehicles and containers on their way to Coalition forces in Iraq via the Port of Savannah. The deployment supplies units of the U.S. Army's Third Infantry Division based at Ft.
Benning and Ft. Bennett, Ga., as well as other units located at Ft. Sill, Okla., Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Ft. Riley, Kan. A specialty freight car, the HERC (heavy equipment ramp car), is used to load and unload roll on/roll off equipment. It provides a mobile ramp that can be used in a variety of settings without having to transport equipment to a terminal. The HERC was originally developed for NS's National Guard business and is now an important part of the transportation chain for military equipment deployments.
