Tren Urbano finally opens
Railway Age, Feb, 2005
Limited service has started on the long-delayed Tren Urbano rail transit line in San Juan, Puerto Rico. About 41,000 riders tried the service on its first day, Dec. 19. The system will be fare-free and only be open on weekends with limited 12-minute headways until the end of this month or early March.
Once station fare collection equipment and other parts of the $2.25 billion, 11-mile system have been tested and accepted, regularly scheduled revenue service will begin, and peak hour trains will eventually operate at five-minute intervals.
The line was originally projected to open on July 1, 2001.
