Detroit Edison, Bnsf: "A Real Partnership" - Detroit Edison signs long term transportation contract with Burlington Northern and Santa Fe - Brief Article

Railway Age, March, 1999

Under a renegotiated long-term contract, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe will haul 23 million tons of coal this year for Detroit Edison and subsidiary companies. BNSF will move the coal from Powder River Basin mines in Wyoming and Montana to the Midwest Energy Resources terminal in Superior, Wis., and to Chicago for interchange with other railroads. Though terms of the agreement were not disclosed, both sides were clearly pleased. Gary Lapplander, manager

of fuel supply for Detroit Edison, said the contract offers benefits "allowing us to become more competitive in a deregulated environment." Gregory Swenson, BNSF senior vice president, Coal and Agricultural Commodities, said the agreement represents "a real partnership."
