Ferromex Signs With Motivepower - Ferrocarril Mexicano signs $48.6 million contract with MotivePower Insustries for maintenance of rail cars - Brief Article

Railway Age, March, 1999

Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex), a 5,000-mile privatized railway operated by the joint venture of Grupo Mexico and Union Pacific, has signed a five-year, $48.6 million contract with MotivePower Industries subsidiary MPI de Mexico for the maintenance of 59 locomotives at MPI's San Luis Potosi facility.

The contract replaces one that MPI held with the Mexican National Railroad prior to privatization. The San Luis Potosi shops also maintain 260 locomotives for other Mexican customers, for a total of 319. MPI de Mexico, which also repairs freight cars and produces locomotive and freight car components, received AAR certification in January for its wheel and axle operation. In the U.S., MotivePower's Boise Locomotive subsidiary signed expanded, two-year contracts totaling $3 million with Amtrak, for maintaining San Diego Coaster commuter equipment, and with Utah Railway Co., for maintaining and servicing 10 locomotives.
