Is advertising for bids for manufacture of up to 706 rapid transit cars (a base order of 406 cars, plus options for up to 300 more). Suppliers have until Oct. 15, 2002, to respond. The new cars will replace vehicles built by Budd from 1969-70 and Boeing Vertol from 1976-78, about one-third of CTA's fleet. If a contract is awarded by year-end, a prototype would be ready by 2005.
