Railway Age, June, 2003
Negotiations have begun between MARTA and low bidder Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., for a new smartcard fare collection system. The deal is expected to cost over $100 million but will give MARTA the ability to change from a flat fare, now $1.75, to a distance-based structure. The new system will have the potential to be used by other regional operators and on toll roads, parking lots, and other services.
MARIA hopes the negotiations will be completed by August. If the deal falls through, the agency could begin talks with a second bidder, Thales e-Transactions of France.
