Officially confirming rumors that an underground rail link between North Station and South Station will not be built anytime soon - In Transit: Boston - Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - Brief Article

Railway Age, June, 2003

Officially confirming rumors that an underground rail link between North Station and South Station will not be built anytime soon, MBTA General Manager Mike Mulbern and state Transportation Secretary Dan Grabauskas both said the project is simply unaffordable given the current fiscal climate. Mulhern notified the FTA about the decision.

The idea has been around for about 20 years and has a large body of supporters because it would tie together MBTA's north and south commuter rail networks, vastly increasing efficiency, while allowing through Amtrak service from the Northeast Corridor to New Hampshire and Maine. The cost of the project, including electrification, is estimated by the state at $8.7 billion, although advocates claim that's an inflated price.
