The Oklahoma City Council has approved a proposal to extend Amtrak's Heartland Flyer north of the city to Newton, Kan., where it would link with Amtrak's existing system and offer passenger rail access to Chicago

The Oklahoma City Council has approved a proposal to extend Amtrak's Heartland Flyer north of the city to Newton, Kan., where it would link with Amtrak's existing system and offer passenger rail access to Chicago. The current state-supported train runs between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Tex, The Northern Flyer Alliance, a grassroots organization, is behind the current effort to extend it north of Oklahoma City.

The Kansas Transportation Department, studying the proposal, hopes to issue a report in 2009.
