Railway Age, August, 2003

Alstom Transportation: Awarded a $100 million subcontract to Westcode Corp. for air conditioning units for up to 1,700 new MTA New York City Transit R160 subway cars. The equipment, two units for each car, will be produced at Westcode's plant in Town of Maine. N.Y. NYCT awarded Alstom a $1 billion base contract last July for 660 cars, with an initial option for 620 and a second option for 380 to 420 cars.

Alstom will manufacture approximately 60% of the vehicles at its plant in Hornell, N.Y., while Kawasaki Rail Car will assemble the balance of the order at its Yonkers, N.Y., facility. The R160s will be mechanically and electrically compatible with NYCT's Kawasaki-built R143 fleet.
