Former three-star general will lead ASLRRA - Small-Road Update - Richard F. Timmons, American Short Line & Regional Railroad Association - Brief Article

Railway Age, Sept, 2002

The American Short Line & Regional Railroad Association has selected Richard F. Timmons, 59, a retired U.S. Army three-star general, as its new president. Timmons, formerly a Norfolk Southern Resident Vice President for Public Affairs with responsibility for the states of Pennsylvania and New York, took over Sept. 3. He has signed a five year contract with an option for an additional five years. Timmons replaces Frank Turner, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Turner had intended to leave on May 1, but agreed to stay until his successor was chosen.

Prior to joining NS in 1998, Timmons had a 32-year career in the U.S. Army. He retired as a three-star general and his last assignment was as Commander of the Eighth United States Army in Korea. In conjunction with that position he also served as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces in Korea. In previous assignments he served as Second in Command of the 82nd Airborne Division, Commander of the 7th Light Infantry Division, Commander of the U.S. Army in Panama, and as Executive Officer to two Secretaries of the Army. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Virginia Military Institute, a Masters Degree in Personnel Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Masters Degree in Journalism from the University of Alabama.

"Rich Timmons has been in a position of leadership his entire career and he will be a strong leader for the short line industry," said ASLRRA Chairman Walter Rich. "He brings with him strong management skills, abundant energy, and an aggressive determination to promote our industry among those that affect our businesses."

ASLRRA Legislative Policy Committee Chairman Pete Claussen said Timmons will present well on Capitol Hill, and will be a forceful representative before the Class I's and the shipping community."
