Bombardier to open plant at Plattsburgh, N.Y - Plattsburgh Air Force Base - Brief Article

Railway Age, Oct, 1994

In return for a contract to supply 34 push-pull coaches to Metro-North Commuter Railroad--plus the prospect of additional New York State business--Bombardier has agreed to establish a new plant at the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base. New York Gov. Mario Cuomo and Bombardier Chairman and CEO Laurent Beaudoin were at Plattsburgh City Hall Sept. 13 for the official announcement.

The $43 million Metro-North contract, which last month still needed the approval of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, carries an option for an additional 15 cars valued at $18 million. Jean-Yves Leblanc, president of Bombardier's Transportation Equipment Group-North America, said Bombardier competed against a Japanese company for the order. Bombardier said it will hire 150 people to carry out the Metro-North order.

Bombardier won its first contract from Metro-North in 1981, and has since supplied 106 push-pull cars to the railroad. In 1984-1987, the company delivered 825 subway cars to MTA New York City Transit. Bombardier is also participating in the TA's New Technology Test Train program as the supplier of the R110B railcar.
