Pioneer Railcorp buys bankrupt Michigan line - bankruptcy court approves the acquisition of the Kalamazoo, Lake Shore and Chicago railroad by Pioneer Railcorp - Brief Article

Railway Age, Oct, 1995

A bankruptcy court on Sept. 11 approved the sale of the 13.5-mile Kalamazoo, Lake Shore & Chicago (KLS&C) to Pioneer Railcorp, a short line holding company based in Peoria, Ill. Pioneer subsidiary West Michigan Railroad will be the operator.

KLS&C has been in continuous operation since it was built in 1877, serving the agricultural and food industry.

Brenkman said the new railroad expects to handle 500 carloads of business during its first year of operation, and may revive a tourist/dinner train business that was operated up to early 1994, when the carrier went into bankruptcy. More than 9,300 passenger tickets were told in 1993 and 5,300 during the first four months of 1994.
