IMC trucking growth exceeds that of rail

Railway Age, Jan, 1997

Intermodal marketing companies reporting to the Intermodal Association of North America showed gains in both volume and revenue for the first nine months of 1996, but there were substantial differences in performance between intermodal and highway segments of IMC business. For the period, IMCs' truck loadings were up by 34.5%, intermodal loadings by 10.6%.

Trucking revenues gained by almost 37%, while intermodal revenues were down by 0.1%, although they did show a 2.4% increase in the third quarter to end a five-quarter downward trend. IMC revenue per truckload was up slightly for both the quarter and the nine months. Intermodal revenue per load was down 12.1% for the quarter and 9.6% for the year-to-date through September.
