A 3,000-mile trans-Asia rail line
Railway Age, Jan, 1997
A 3,000-MILE TRANS-ASIA RAIL LINE could be completed within the next few years, according to Dr. Ling Liong Sik, the transport minister of Malaysia. He says the key to the project would be a line between Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Saigon in Vietnam. This would create a railway from Singapore to Kunming in China, via Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Saigon, and Hanoi.
Connections to Myanmar and Laos are also part of a master plan that is being coordinated by Malaysia. There's also a proposal to create a southern Trans-Asia rail link from Thailand via Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan to Iran and further east, by filling in gaps in the network.
