Conrail, Canadian National link up with Rate EDI - integrated computerized billing system used by railroads to make accounts receivable more manageable - Brief Article

Railway Age, Feb, 1996

Conrail and Canadian National have become the first railroads to successfully communicate electronic billing information on interline movements through the Rate EDI Network (REN), as part of the industry's "Error-Free Interline Settlement Rate EDI Network Initiative." Prior to Rate EDI, Conrail and CN exchanged rate information in paper form, a complicated process that generated major errors in customer freight bills and interline settlements.

As a result of Rate EDI, says Conrail, "shippers using both Conrail and CN will see improvements in billing timeliness and accuracy, and in interline settlements. The REN was designed to streamline existing industry practices and provide significant improvements in efficiency, timing, and overall quality of rate administration activities."
