CP expands system rationalization plan
Railway Age, May, 1997
Canadian Pacific has added 1,029 miles of prairie-province branch lines to its system rationalization plan. These are lines regarded as not viable for continued CP operation, although four were listed as candidates for short line purchase/lease. This latest revision to the plan is in addition to rationalization involving 4,400 miles of lines in Canada and the U.S.
that CP had identified earlier. The four lines identified as candidates for short line operation add up to 369 miles in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Options would include sale, lease, or other form of transfer to outside operators or the creation of one or more internal short lines.
