BART grows to 95 miles, 39 stations

Railway Age, May, 1997

With the scheduled opening of a $517 million, 14-mile extension on May 10, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) becomes a 95-mile, 39-station system. The new stations are Castro Valley and Dublin/Pleasanton, both in the I-580 median.

BART says construction of the Dublin/Pleasanton Extension presented it with the challenge of integrating the electrical systems of a new rail line into the existing line at Bay Fair without disrupting daily operations. The project also involved the building of 21 bridge structures, widening I-238 to allow room for BART in the freeway median, and widening I-580 east of Foothill Road

These are the fourth and fifth new BART stations brought on line since December 1995. The others were North Concord/Martinez, Pittsburg/Bay Point, and Cola. All are part of a BART system expansion that will eventually cost 52.7 billion.
